Founded as a Roman colony in 16 B.C. by Emperor Augustus, Trieris Germany’s oldest city. The focal point of Trier is the Porta Nigra (“black gate”), which is now the largest Roman city gate north of the Alps. The Porta Nigra was erected in 180 A.D. and is a UNESCO World Heritage site.
