Danube Dreams for Wine Lovers
Our Itinerary

In Prague, guided sightseeing shows us the city’s best-known treasures and an excursion takes you to Mĕlník to visit the wine cellars of the Lobkowicz family. Then we’ll drive to Regensburg, one of Germany’s best-preserved medieval cities. Lovers of architecture will delight in the treasures this town has to offer. Enjoy a tasting of local sausages before heading to Deggendorf, where our river cruise journey begins. Passau, the “City of Three Rivers” lies at the confluence of the Danube, Inn, and Ilz Rivers. We’ll walk the city with a Local Guide and marvel at the patrician houses and baroque St. Stephen’s Cathedral. In Linz, Austria, we’ll walk around the Hauptplatz, Austria’s largest medieval square which forms the center of the city and prepares our taste buds for an exclusive onboard food and wine-pairing dinner hosted by your Master of Wine. We’ll enjoy the splendid views as we cruise through the picturesque wine region of Wachau Valley. We’ll stop in Melk to visit the spectacular Benedictine Abbey; and in Dürnstein, we may join an optional interactive wine experience and tasting. Vienna, the “City of Music,” makes an immediate impression with its lavish Hofburg Imperial Palace and neo-renaissance Vienna Opera House. We’ll enjoy a guided tour of this magical city and then take time to explore on our own. In Bratislava, Slovakia’s capital, a guided walk takes us through the delightful Old Town and a visit to gothic St. Martin’s Cathedral.

Lastly, a local expert shows us the must-see sights of Budapest, then takes us to visit wine cellars right in the heart of the city! A perfect ending to this timeless European river cruise.

  • Czeching Out Prague

The culture-packed capital of the Czech Republic, Prague, is a popular land add-on Danube and Elbe river cruises. Romantically titled ‘The City of a Thousand Spires’ Prague claims some of the finest churches in Europe, dotted along cobbled passageways, classical opera houses and medieval bridges – and all safeguarded by a formidable fairytale castle. Its blend of historic monuments, interactive museums, hidden gardens, exceptional restaurants, cavernous breweries, lively markets and spirited jazz clubs ensure there isn’t a dull moment in this bohemian city.

Viking River Cruises offers a delightful itinerary called Elegant Elbe which includes an overnight stay in Prague with an included panoramic tour of the city, a UNESCO site and the famous Hradcany Castle. Viking descripes the journey, “Discover the natural beauty of former East Germany’s dramatic landscape on an Elbe River cruise. Tour the opulent palaces of Saxon monarchs and stroll through beautifully landscaped gardens; sail between the dramatic sandstone cliffs of Germany’s Saxon Switzerland. Marvel at the baroque splendor of Dresden and see how Meissenware porcelain is produced. Walk in the footsteps of Martin Luther in historic Wittenberg and learn about the Protestant Reformation. Your journey is bookended by one night in multicultural Berlin and one night in graceful Prague. An elegant experience indeed.”

Prague is especially proud of its favorite beverage: beer. In 1466 just off Prague’s Old Town Square, a tiny micro brewery first opened its door. On the same spot today, Ladislav Vesely continues the centuries-old tradition of making the finest Czech beer.

During free time, explore Prague’s rich Jewish history in the former Jewish Ghetto. Follow Karine of Viking River Cruises in Prague, as she visits the oldest synagogue in Europe, where generations have worshiped since 1270.
