Avalon Waterways is a leading player in European river cruising with ships showcasing features and amenities that were thoughtfully designed with the traveler in mind. Everything from the introduction of floor-to-ceiling windows to hotel-style amenities in every stateroom has raised the bar in river cruising. And Avalon continues to lead the way with sailing three new “Suite Ships” in 2012, the Avalon Panorama, Avalon Vista and Avalon Visionary. Features like “Open Air Balconies”, wall-to-wall panoramic windows, and spacious staterooms and suites give travelers the freedom to experience their destination like never before.

In 2013, Avalon Waterways is introducing Avalon Choice– an entirely new concept in river cruising. Avalon Choice gives river cruisers the freedom to personalize their cruise, from beginning to end. River cruisers will now enjoy the luxury of choice, from deciding what and where to eat, to selecting room configuration and cruising style; from choosing on-land discoveries and onboard enrichment programs to making online, pre-sail customizations via MyAvalon, beginning in 2013.

Avalon is embracing “the destination” in a more robust way. In 2013, the changes mean that Avalon cruisers can choose from four types of tours ashore – Essential Sightseeing, Traditional Sightseeing, Leisure Sightseeing and Alternative Sightseeing that’s focused on a special interest.
The new category of Essential Sightseeing is designed for travelers are looking for more free time. It will entail a basic orientation to a destination with exterior viewing of “must-see” sites but also integrate unstructured time for guests to explore on their own.

Recognizing that onboard dining is critical to river cruisers, Avalon is introducing Avalon Choice Dining. At every meal, cruisers will choose from a multitude of dining offerings – from experiencing the local culture through cuisine at culinary events to a la carte dining – and at multiple venues both onboard and off the ship.

In 2013, foodies will have access to tastings that provide a chance to sample famous local delicacies. Also new, a native chef will come onboard the ship at least once per cruise to prepare regional dishes and offer tastings.

Sample Regional Specialties Onboard

When you combine an inspired fleet with legendary land tours, an Avalon Waterways vacation introduces you to the beauty and history along the world’s most intimate waterways. Why not experience a vacation that will stay with you forever?

My husband and I were among other travel agents and media onboard to preview Scenic Cruises® sixth “Space-Ship,” the Scenic Crystal, sailing from Amsterdam to Rüdesheim, Germany where she was christened on April 25, 2012. Glen Moroney, founder and managing director, was on hand for the christening event.

Our cabin on the Danube deck featured a “Sun Lounge,” unique to Scenic Cruises. It’s a weatherproof, step-out balcony enclosed with a floor-to-ceiling glass patio door, where the upper portion can be lowered with the touch of a button to create an open-air balcony. You’ll never miss a Kodak moment as you glide past the many castles on the Rhine and Moselle.

Our balcony cabin category came with butler service which included packing and unpacking luggage upon request, room service including delivering morning coffee and pressing up to two garments per day — all complimentary. I set out a blazer with the ironing order form on the bed one morning. When I returned from my shore excursion, the pressed blazer was waiting for me. We wanted to take DJ, our butler, home with us.

A recent press release from Sandals Resorts International proudly announced that its very own Culinary Ambassador, Chef Walter Staib, received a third Emmy Award for his television cooking series A Taste of History® during the prestigious 29th Annual Emmy® Awards held in Philadelphia. The second season of the show won Best Historic/Cultural Program or Special, while in its first season, Emmy® Awards went to Chef Staib and James Davey for “On-Camera Talent – Program Host/Moderator” and “Director” respectively.

The press release went on to say that “Chef Staib combined his passions for history and Caribbean cooking for seasons two and three of A Taste of History®, by filming in Jamaica, Saint Lucia, Antigua and The Bahamas to share the story of the influence that the West Indies had on Colonial culture and dining.
His love affair with Caribbean cuisine began in the 1970’s as he completed major food and beverage projects on the French side of Saint Martin and in Montego Bay, Jamaica. Studying intensely under Jamaican cooks in jerk huts, food stalls at Faith’s Pen, in the Blue Mountains as well as in local markets, fruit and spice orchards, molasses, rum and coffee plantations, Staib became a veritable authority on Jamaican delicacies and dishes.
Chef Staib also founded the Caribbean Culinary Federation, bringing authentic and delicious Caribbean flavors to the various restaurants and menus throughout all Sandals Resorts and Beaches Resorts. As the Sandals Culinary Ambassador, he ensures guests experience top-notch dishes, ranging from genuine Caribbean cuisine to Asian and Italian cuisine.”

For vacationers to the Caribbean, fall is an ideal time for fewer crowds and, typically, great prices. Another plus for couples traveling is the fact that children have gone back to school. But wait! It’s also hurricane season. June 1 through November 30 is commonly known as “Hurricane Season” in North America. And, with hurricane Irene bearing down on the East Coast, many travel suppliers have executed storm preparations.

Oceania Cruises Caribbean

Even at the peak of the season — late August to mid October — the chances of a hurricane spoiling your trip are fairly low. But in case a nasty storm is predicted, here are a few tips:

Check the airline, cruise line, tour operator, or resort website for penalty waivers. You may be able to change your travel dates without incurring huge fees.

Be sure the travel supplier has your contact information. Notifications of changes can occur up to the last minute. It’s important that you can be reached to discuss alternative options.

Always carry essentials — medications, cell phone and laptop chargers, toiletries, and a change of clothes — in your carry-on luggage. Storm delays may cause you to get separated from your checked luggage because of missed connections. Speaking from experience.

Purchase travel insurance when you make your initial deposit on your trip. No one ever plans a vacation thinking they can’t go. But, when the unexpected happens — illness, flight delays, lost luggage, etc. — travel insurance will protect your financial investment.

To minimize your chances of a hurricane ruining your fall vacation, plan a trip to Aruba, Bonaire, or Curacao or take a Caribbean cruise. The ABC islands are below the hurricane belt and cruise ships are mobile so they can re-work their itineraries to keep guests in the sunshine.

Want to investigate travel insurance?
